RES, known locally in Scandinavia as Nordisk Vindkraft, has sold the Vargträsk wind project in the County of Västerbotten, Sweden, to Vattenfall. The project consists of 21 turbines and has an installed capacity of 80MW, enough to power approximately 50 000 homes*.

The Vargträsk project has been developed by RES and the environmental permit for the project came into force in 2016. Vattenfall has now acquired the assets and will take the project further towards construction. RES has a portfolio of about ten wind farm projects under development in Sweden and Norway and foresees exponential growth for wind power in Scandinavia. In Västerbotten, RES will now focus on the project cluster of Hornberget, Fjällberg and Vinliden and its connection to the Tuggen Power Station.

Matilda Afzelius, CEO of RES in Scandinavia said “We see the natural synergies for Vattenfall with the Vargträsk project and are proud to hand over a well-developed project to them. We wish Vattenfall the best of luck with the continued development and upcoming construction".

Daniel Gustafsson, Vattenfall "As part of our strategy to grow in the renewable energy sector, acquisitions is one of several possible ways to go. The proximity to the Blakliden / Fäbodberget wind farm, which we will now build, and the existing wind farm Stor-Rotliden will give us clear synergies. From a national perspective, this cluster provides a significant boost to renewable energy”.

*Calculated on an annual consumption of electricity of 5000 kWh per household.
