Andrew Saunders, Senior Electrical Engineer at Statoil, said: “Natural Power supported Statoil in the construction and commissioning phase of Hywind Scotland Pilot Park by the provision of 33kV senior authorised persons (SAP) working under the Statoil Wind UK Safety Rules. Three SAPs were provided to the Statoil project team on rotation for a number of months in the intense final stage of the project prior to the handover of site to the Statoil operations team.

“The SAPs provided safety from the system, prepared commissioning switching schedules and offered general support to the construction and commissioning teams. The SAPs provided were knowledgeable in their field and professional in their manner on site.”

The £210m, 30MW project, which is located 18 miles off the coast of Peterhead, in Scotland, was officially opened by Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. The site consists of five 6MW wind turbines that are anchored into the seafloor in water depths of up to 120 meters. Hywind Scotland will provide 6,600 homes with electricity, displacing 63,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

Natural Power provided SAP support for deployment at Hywind by arrangement with Balfour Beatty and in accordance with a provided programme of work. Duties included fulfilment of the role of SAP under Statoil’s safety rules on all plant and apparatus associated with the Hywind project, operating the Hywind scheme as necessary to remove plant and apparatus from service for application of the safety rules, review of all risk assessments and method statements associated with the planned/unplanned works, presence at the onshore substation as required for the delivery of the services, provision of the appropriate supervision of contractors as necessary to ensure safety, record keeping and participation in audits as necessary, and undertaking other such associated tasks within authority and ability as directed by Balfour Beatty.
