Government backing renewables and gender diversity in Offshore Wind Sector Deal
Part of a delegate, Claire was in the East of England –which she has gone on record to describe as the “epicentre” of renewable energy to visit the site office of ScottishPower’s East Anglia ONE Wind Farm, expected to be fully-constructed by next year.
The commitment to jobs for women is another example of the industry-wide drive for gender diversity. This time last year, on International Women’s Day 2018, RenewableUK launched Switch –a directory of spokeswomen for the energy sector –which now has in excess of 300 members, including James Fisher’s very own Corrine Barry, Paula Crosby and Jennie Kevis-Stirling.
Speaking specifically about the £2.5bn East Anglia ONE Wind Farm, based in Lowestoft, Claire discussed the positive economic impact the project will have on the local area in creating lasting career opportunities and inspiring next generations to pursue careers in energy.
While on site, the delegation received a demonstration of the industry-leading Offshore Wind Management System (OWMS)® that has been developed by James Fisher Marine Services (JFMS) and supplied to ScottishPower Renewables as part of the Integrated Marine Package we are providing at East Anglia ONE.
Heather Leadbetter, operations and maintenance (O&M) project coordinator at JFMS, said:
“It was a fantastic opportunity to meet Claire yesterday. Having managed the Integrated Marine Package for ScottishPower Renewables since September 2018, it was great to be there as a representative for James Fisher Marine Services and discuss an element of the Package we provide.
“I have worked in the renewables industry for five years now and it would be great to see more women in project engineering and offshore roles promoting gender diversity, and I truly admire Claire’s commitment in ensuring that happens over the next few years.
“It’s a brilliant industry to work in, so much to learn, with endless career opportunities for both men and women who want to be part of a growing industry that’s making a positive impact on the world!”
The Offshore Sector Deal is of huge significance, bringing forward renewable energy in the UK, which could be the source of 70% of energy supply by 2030.
